02_Project Setup: Creating a New Project from a Blank or Imported Template (2:33)
Overview
This video walks through creating a new project in AECinspire from the dashboard. It covers the two ways a project can be started — as a bare bones blank template project, or by importing an existing project template that carries your company's assemblies, layers, and parameters across into the new job. Users creating their very first project can complete the form in under a minute; users at a company with an established template will spend most of their time in the import step.
What you'll learn
- Where to find Add New Project on your dashboard
- Which project fields you fill in and which are set for you
- The difference between a blank template project and an imported project template
- How to select a Source Project and import its skeleton into your new job
- How to include or exclude individual items from the import
- How to open your new project once it has been created
Before You Begin
You need an active AECinspire login and access to your dashboard. If you are creating projects for the first time and your company has not yet built a project template, you can skip the import step entirely and start from a blank template project. If your company already has a project template or assembly template in place, have the name of that template ready — you will select it as the Source Project during creation.
Part 1 — Start a New Project from the Dashboard
- From your dashboard, go to the upper left hand corner.
- Click Add New Project.
- Fill in the Project Name. In this video the narrator names the example project Training Project.
- Review the Company Name. This field is static — you will only see the company you are associated with.
- Optionally, upload a Project Image.
- Move to the next bar on the form, labeled Import Project Template.
- Toggle the Import Project Template bar on.
- Select the Source Project.
- Choose the template you are looking to use. In this video the narrator selects the AECinspire Default Assembly Template.
- Review the selections shown after you choose your Source Project.
- Uncheck anything that does not apply to this project — for example, if you did not want to bring in default values or your layers.
- Leave everything else checked to bring the full template across.
- When everything is set, click Proceed.
- The new project is created and appears on your dashboard.
- Find the project at the top of your list — it will show as the Last Updated project.
- Click Go to Project to open it.
Note: The create-project form has two stages. Step 2 is the Import Project Template stage. If you are simply creating projects and have no existing template, you can bypass Step 2 altogether.
Part 2 — Enter the Project Details
Note: Because Company Name is static, there is nothing to select here. Users who belong to a single company will always see that one company on the form.
Part 3 — Choose Between a Blank Template and an Imported Project Template
At this point in the form you decide how the project will be built. The choice determines whether the project opens empty or already loaded with your company's assemblies.

A first project, or a company with no template built yet |
Any company that already has a project template or assembly template created |
|
Setup required after creation |
Full setup from scratch |
None — upload your sheets and get right to work |
Note: The key name to remember for the first option is blank template. It is a bare bones project with no assembly parts in it.
Part 4 — Import a Project Template (Step 2)
Use this part only if your company has an assembly template or project template already created.
Selecting a Source Project pulls the skeleton of that project into your new job:
|
What comes across |
Why it matters |
|
System data |
Your company's system definitions are already in place |
|
Work package |
Work packaging structure carries over |
|
Order status |
Order status values are pre-populated |
|
Level, area, room |
Location parameters are ready to use |
|
Company standard layers |
Your standard layers are pulled across as a default project |
|
Parts list for all assemblies |
The most important item — your assemblies are already in when you open the project |
Best practice: Importing a project template is an important step as you are starting to get going with Inspire. Once the assemblies are in, you can upload your sheets and get right to work without having to set anything extra up.

Troubleshooting
|
Issue |
Resolution |
|
New project opens with no assemblies or parts |
The project was created as a blank template. A blank template has no assembly parts by design. Create the project again using Import Project Template, or build the assemblies manually. |
|
No template appears in the Source Project list |
Your company has not created a project template or assembly template yet. Create the project from the blank template instead. |
|
Cannot change the Company Name on the form |
Expected. Company Name is static and shows only the company you are associated with. |
|
Import Project Template options are not visible |
The bar must be toggled on before the Source Project selector appears. |
|
Template brought across values you did not want |
Uncheck the items that do not apply — such as default values or layers — in the selections list before clicking Proceed. |
|
Cannot find the project after creating it |
The new project appears as the Last Updated project at the top of your dashboard. Click Go to Project to open it. |
